What do you think?

Becky and I met last night, as planned. We went to O'Charleys and had a few drinks at the bar. I had three white russians and she had two mudslides. On the way home I had to stop for gas and cigarettes so we pulled into a local Sheetz. I'll be darned if right across the street (going the opposite way we were, Thank god) was a Road Block, or as they call them around here, a "License Check". There were about 20 police and they were stopping each car that went by to checking for drivers license and other type such stuff. I was a little shocked. I mean.... yes I had seen them on some of the smaller roads in the past, but this was 460, a major highway going through the middle of town! We're talking a 4 lane highway.
In Massachusetts this type of thing is illegal.
My question to you is, do you think they should be able to do this or is it a violation of a drivers rights in some way or other?

Having lost a friend in accident by a drunk driver with no licence or insurance my answer is a simple YES. People with no licences should be taken of the road. here is a reason they don't have a licence. They can't drive or are too irresponsible to even get one. They don't care about the other users of the roads. The only way to do this is to stop the car! If this means a busy highway, why not...

Driving is a privilege, not a right.
You have to get a license and insurance for the privilege to drive on a public roadway, so, yes, they have every right to check cars.
They mostly check for drunk drivers or people who have no license due to either bad driving, drunk driving, or other dangerous things.
People who are crappy drivers or who have been drinking should not be driving.

Having had a family member involved in a drunk driving wreck I'm supportive of these types of checks. Especially on holiday weekends like this one. I'd rather run into the inconvience than a drunk driver run into me. Here via Michele and off to check more of your site. ;-)

I think it's great actually that they do this. Far too many people think it's ok to drink and drive, drive without a license, w/o insurance etc. Sure it may be inconvient...but I'd rather deal with inconvience than driving by an accident because someone was drinking and driving or driving without any sense, etc.
We're a very spoiled nation and at some point we have seemed to forget that driving is NOT a right, it's a privelege and if you can't follow the rules/laws you have no business out there on the road, any road!

Well, if there had been a lot of accidents on that street, then perhaps it was warranted, but I know we don't have that happen here in Wisconsin. Hmmm....

I would have to agree that yes, it is ok to check for license and might make people slow down, maybe get off cell phones and such. In Oklahoma you couldn't get a tag without proof of insurance. In Alabama you don't even have to have cars inspected. Such a difference in insurance prices too.

Almost forgot, here from Michele.

I think it's an infrigement on one's privacy.

We have those types of stops through town all the time. Usually on Friday or Saturday nights. Sometimes they are right on the main street. It's probably a good idea, because there are people who drive with no licence and no insurance...

The police should have every right to search whoever they want, whenever they want. It's the only way we can ensure public safety.

Your question comes at an interesting time: Canada's had a rash of road racing-related deaths and injuries in recent weeks. The federal government is enacting tougher laws to combat it. Spot checks don't invade privacy - they save lives.
